Big Blast Being Planned To Celebrate Fourth Of July

Dale Peterson doesn't like the idea of Cannon Countians having to go elsewhere to enjoy a community Fourth of July celebration, so he's hoping to organize one here, starting this year.

Peterson, a local attorney, has approached the governments of Auburntown, Woodbury and Cannon County about sharing the costs of a fireworks display this year.

If those municipalities agree to share the cost of funding the event, it will be held on Friday, July 2, at Dillon Park.

Peterson is estimating the costs of the fireworks will be between $3,000 and $4,000. Entertainment costs (live music) is expected to cost $2,000. Additional estimated expenses are a state permit ($50), ribbons and prizes for games and events ($200) and advertising ($300).

The total budget Peterson is proposing is $6,550.

The costs of the proceeds less any funds raised by sponsors wound be paid by Cannon County (40 percent, $2,620), the Town of Woodbury (40 percent, $2,620) and Auburntown (20 percent, $1,310), Peterson said.

Although Peterson is seeking funding from the local governments to put on the show, he is also hoping to defray the costs by seeking donations from local businesses and charitable organizations.

"This is something the county needs to do as a thank you to its citizens," Peterson said. "We want to celebrate the Fourth of July with an event that the public can enjoy."

The fireworks show will be free to the public. However, Peterson is asking that persons who attend bring a non-perishable food item for donation to the local food bank.
