LETTER: Sheriff Young Made Right Decision

Since the Sheriff stopped using the inmates at the convenience center I have heard from only one person who said he should send them back. This person ate breakfast with me at Joe’s Place. He went as far to say that it would hurt the Sheriff in the next election. I say phooey to that.

The sheriff identified the problem of drugs getting into the jail and took action. Isn’t that what we are paying him for? Did he sweep it under the rug and try to keep it from people? No. He let it be out. I understand that someone put a derogatory sign over at the convenience center stating that there were no more prisoners unloading your garbage, “thanks to the working sheriff”. Yes, thank you Sheriff Young for doing your job and keeping the county out of a lawsuit which could be caused by inmates under the influence of drugs. That is why I voted for you.

The people that work over there knew that they wouldn’t be unloading refuge, it was intended that people dump their own garbage.

Is it easier to stay in your vehicle and have someone else take out the trash and dump it for you? Well yes. But is it necessary? No. Everyone around here is used to working. When the convenience center opened we knew we would have to dump it ourselves. And what happened when we did that?  No longer was our trash being put over the guardrail in our county. The convenience center is a good thing, but it wasn’t in the plans to use inmate labor.

The sheriff let them go over there and work to help out the county, and the inmates themselves were helped out by doubling their jail credits. They are the ones to blame for no longer being over there, not the sheriff. And ultimately it is his decision; and I personally think it was a good decision.  If you think so also let the sheriff know; I find him easy to talk to.

I never felt comfortable going up there by myself. I am glad the inmates are no longer there.

Thanks.

I think this was a good decision and I think our Sheriff is doing a great job.

Stopping the inmate/public contact was an appropriate move. Keeping or reducing contraband from the inmate population far overrides the convenience of inmate labor. After all we got the garbage into our vehicle-it is no big deal to toss it out. TTT

Good job sheriff. Now could you stop the inmate work next to Woodbury Grammar. I hate the fact that when I drop my son off in the morning, there are inmates 100 yards away. It bothers the hell out of me.

I go to the Convenience Center almost twice a week and I put my garbage in my truck, I made the garbage, I can take it out of my truck. The Convenience Center is a convenience for the community not a right...if you want your trash emptied , hire someone to come by your home and pick it up at the end of the road. Sheriff Young is an excellent Sheriff, easy to approach and you see him all over the county day and night. He is what he said he would be "A WORKING SHERIFF". We are glad that he took action and stopped what was going on at the Convenience Center and now everyone can feel safe with their children, themselves and not have doubts about going there. It was a good decision and Darrell, keep up keeping our community safe!

Thanks so much Sheriff Young! It's so nice to go up there now. No more worries and like others have stated. We put the trash in our vehicle..no problem taking it out ourselves. It's so nice to have a working sheriff that really cares!

I feel if they were convicted off murder they would not be there in the first place. I think they do a good job at all places where they help.

I think the sheriff is doing a good job, but I dont think that is the only way contraband is making its way inside the jail.

I agree with Mason. Murderers and rapists should not be used but other inmates could and should be used to unload trash. I have never felt I was in danger. They were courteous and polite to me at all times. It was good to be unloaded without getting out of my vehicle and quickly be on my way. People can lock their doors and pop their trunks or have their trucks unloaded without getting out of their vechicles. I think the inmates should be allowed to work at the convenience center.

i think darryl did right by the county....if you want the inmates there they maybe you should think about your taxes going up because it will take people properly trained to gaurd them... so how much is it worth to you to dump your own trash?

This issue with the inmates working at the collection center was a simple issue of deputies/county employees not doing their job. These people are inmates, they are convicted criminals. If you act suprised when they come back from a work crew with contriband, and you haven't searched them, then maybe it's better to leave them in the jail and not let them out.

Why weren't they searched each day upon returning to the jail.....other counties in our area have work detail for the inmates. When they return from their detail they are searched. If an inmate is in jail for a DUI, writing bad checks, etc....then they should be working off their debt to the county.

If an inmate is in jail serving a short time and not violent i think they should work to help pay for the cost they create by keeping them locked up.Dont get me wrong i agree with the sheriff for pulling them when he seen laws were being broke, but on the other hand i would send two more out there and watch them very close.I am sure there are some that would do the job and not break the law just to work for a few hours away from the jail

Put them to work doing something. It's being done in other counties. Maybe the sheriff can figure it out. White county has them going along Hwy 111 picking trash at 6am in 30 degree weather why can't we.
February 25, 2011 at 8:32am
I agree with the Sheriffs decision as well. There is plenty of trash on the roads that needs to be picked up...

I think they should be picking up trash instead of riding around wasting my tax dollars.
