PrintA Woodbury woman and her father both face DUI-related charges following a Feb. 28 traffic stop.
On that date at around 6:35 a.m., Cannon County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Bruce Kirby was going northbound on Jim Cummings Hwy. He was traveling behind a red 1986 Ford pickup truck which he observed to be driving erratically.
Kirby followed the vehicle from Hollow Springs Road to Cannon Market and observed it cross both the fog line and the yellow line several times to the extent that it left the roadway.
The vehicle was occupied by a white male and female. The female was the driver. Kirby administered his emergency lights and stopped the vehicle in front of the old video store on South McCrary St.
Kirby approached the vehicle on the driver’s side and made contact with the female operator, later identified as Ila Kay Smith. He started a conversation with her and could smell a strong odor of an alcohol intoxicant coming from both her person and the vehicle. He also observed Smith’s speech was slurred.
The chief deputy then had Smith exit the vehicle and asked her to perform a series of field sobriety tests. Smith consented to the request. Accord to Kirby’s report, Smith failed all tests administered.
Smith was transported to Stones River Hospital for a blood alcohol content test by Deputy Brandon Gullett, and then to the Cannon County Jail for booking.
The passenger, Donald Wayne Smith, was arrested on charges of DUI by Consent and public drunkenness. The truck his daughter was driving is registered to him, and he had knowledge she had been drinking.
Both are scheduled to appear in Cannon County General Sessions Court in April.
In a similar incident, Sheriff’s Deputies Brandon Mims and Reed Bryson responded to a call on Feb. 25 to assist a stranded motorist on Burt Bergen Rd. Dispatch informed them the vehicle had run out of gas.
Upon arrival, the deputies found Troy Dale Gibson, 2670 Sorrells Rd., Petersburg, TN and and Eugenia Keasling, 1328 Toy Denny Rd., Bradyville, parked at about the 3200 block of Burt Bergen Rd. with the headlights and radio of the vehicle on. Gibson was in the driver’s seat with the key in the ignition and in the on position. He was slumped over as if he had fallen asleep. Keisling was trying to awaken Gibson during the time Deputy Mims was asking her if she could contact someone to bring them gas.
Gibson admitted he had been drinking and said he had had a fifth of vodka. He also stated he did not have a driver’s license. He said his license had been revoked for DUI. Deputy Mims could smell an odor of an intoxicant about the car and on Gibson as well.
Keisling admitted she knew Gibson had been drinking. She said they were returning home from Lakewood Park. She said they had been out drinking. Deputy Mims attempted to have Gibson perform field sobriety tests, but they were terminated for safety reasons, as he was unable to stand on his own.
Keisling was charged with DUI by Consent in that she knew and allowed Gibson to drive from the bar to where they were located under the influence of alcohol. She told the deputies she knew Gibson was drunk and not able to drive, but said he fusses when he does not get to drive.
Gibson was charged with DUI and driving on a revoked license, 4th offense. Both subjects were transported to the Cannon County Jail. Two officers had to lift Gibson out of the patrol car upon arrival. Keisling’s bond was set at $1,500. Gibson’s bond was set at $8,000. Both are scheduled to appear in Cannon County General Sessions Court on April 5.
