Sen. Mae Beavers seeks re-election

After the conclusion of the 108th General Assembly, today Senator Mae Beavers formally launched her campaign to continue to serve the people of District 17 in the State Senate.

“It has been an honor to represent the people of Cannon, Clay, DeKalb, Macon, Smith, and Wilson Counties,” said Senator Beavers. “I pledge to continue to be an effective leader in the legislature – sponsoring and passing legislation that protects our freedoms, while also holding the state and Washington accountable with how they spend the taxpayers’ money. In addition, I vow to strengthen an already great relationship with city and county leaders to continue to bring jobs and infrastructure projects to District 17.”

Senator Mae Beavers has been a leader for the people in District 17 for over a decade. First elected as a county commissioner, she bucked the establishment and pushed for the passage of Wilson County’s first financial management plan. She then ran for the State House of Representatives, where she fought for the values of the people of WilsonCounty as their representative in Nashville. Most known for her staunch stance against higher taxes, Senator Beavers was credited by many to be one of the driving forces to kill a state income tax in Tennessee.
After Senator Beavers was elected to the State Senate in 2002, she continued to be a reliable and effective legislator, sponsoring and passing laws which included legislation to lower the sales tax on food, legislation to protect our constitutional rights to privacy and to keep and bear arms, legislation that enabled Tennesseans to make their own healthcare choices, as well as legislation that strengthened the state’s DUI and drug laws. She has also worked with numerous local leaders from Cannon, Clay, DeKalb, Macon, Smith and Wilson Countiesto secure funding and bring road and bridge projects to District 17.

During the most recent General Assembly, Senator Beavers has one of the most effective and successful legislators in terms of sponsoring and passing major, conservative legislation. She has led in the fight to strengthen the laws against users and distributors of meth, while also fighting for law-abiding citizens to have access to cold medicine without government interference. She has been a successful advocate for Mothers Against Drunk Driving, and this past year, she was called upon by Governor Haslam to sponsor and pass legislation to once again toughen our state’s DUI laws.

Senator Beavers has a Bachelor of Science degree from Trevecca Nazarene University. Before retiring, she attended Nashville School of Law, worked as a court reporter and paralegal, and worked as a financial advisor. Since being elected to the State Senate, she has taken a leadership role, serving six years as Chair of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and the past two years as First Vice-Chair of the Transportation Committee and the Energy and Natural Resources Committee. Senator Beavers and her husband of 47 years, Jerry, attend Trevecca Community Church, and are proud parents and grandparents.
