The Tennessee Comptroller's Office has completed its annual review of the Basic Education Program (BEP) calculation for fiscal year 2019-20. The Office concluded that nearly all 142 school districts in Tennessee received precisely the amount of money they were due under the statutorily defined funding formula.
The Comptroller's Office found only two minor points for revision. In total, these revisions amounted to a net overallocation of $6,000 in state funding to Tennessee school districts. This averages out to an error rate of approximately 1.2 pennies for each $10,000 distributed.
The verification found that one district was underpaid by $1,000, and four districts received a total overpayment of $7,000. The remaining 137 districts had no change in funding.
"A discrepancy of $6,000 is about as close to zero as you can get when you're dealing with a total calculation of $4.8 billion," said Comptroller Justin P. Wilson. "I commend the Department of Education on the accuracy of this year's BEP calculation."
This is the fourth consecutive fiscal year the Comptroller's Office has reviewed the state's BEP calculation for accuracy. The Office also brings transparency to the BEP formula by making a BEP Calculator available to all Tennesseans on its website. The calculator has been updated for fiscal year 2019-20.
