A fourth battle between Watertown and Cannon County this season is highly unlikely. If that happens it would mean both teams advanced to the championship game of the region tournament. Tuesday night, the two neighbors fought back and forth with the grand prize of the District 8-AA tournament consolation and a not so grand prize of being in the same bracket as the Upperman Bees should the team advance past the first round.
The Lions fought back from a 8 point lead and led by as many as ten with five minutes left to go in the fourth quarter. Careless turnovers and the inability to connect on free throws gave the opportunity for Watertown to make a run in which they took full advantage of and for the third time in as many games this season between the two teams it ended up being an overtime affair.
Watertown tied the game late in overtime and out rebounded the Lions on the last possession to score the winning basket and win 56-54.
Lions will now travel to Grundy County Saturday night for a 7:00 first round region game.
The winner will advance to the region semifinal at Tennessee Tech March 3rd to meet the winner of the York and Bledsoe County game also on Saturday in Jamestown.
The opposite bracket has Upperman hosting Sequatchie County while Cumberland County will play at home against Watertown.
Gus Davenport was the only Lion named to the all District tournament team.
Upperman is the tournament champion after disposing of York 70-47.
