The Walking Horse Breeders and Trainers Association has voted the Woodbury Lions Club Horse Show "Best One-Night Show in the country," despite the fact that a heavy rainstorm flooded the grounds and the show had to be moved to an inside show ring in Shelbyville.
The annual show, always on first Saturday Night in July, has won that prestigious honor nine of the past 10 years, according to Bruce Steelman, general chairman of the show. Steelman was joined by Andy Jacobs, president of the Woodbury Lions Club as they received the award at an awards meeting in Shelbyville last week.
The Woodbury horse show got its start as part of the Cannon County Fair in the late 1930s with members of the newly-formed Lions Club in leadership roles. It became widely-known as an outstanding horse show when it was moved to the present location years later.
The Lions Club led in construction of the present show ring with two tiers of box seats all around. Many horse show enthusiasts have said the Woodbury show ring is the best "small town" ring in the state.
The Woodbury Lions Club depends on the money raised at the horse show for much of their charitable projects including providing eye health care from exams and glasses to major eye surgery for the indigent of our county.
Plans are already being made for the 2014 show scheduled for Saturday, July 5.
