Margie Ruth Finley Petty passed away Monday, April 10, 2017 at her home in Woodbury. She was 92. Mrs. Petty is survived by her husband of 71 years, Arthur O. Petty, Jr. of Woodbury, and two daughters, Jeanne Carole Petty Baxter and her husband, Todd of Woodbury, and Marsha A. Petty of Woodbury. In addition, several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard Finley and Ester Ownby Finley, brothers Bethel, Kenneth, Homer, and Foy Finley, and sister Mary Alberta Taylor.
Mrs. Petty was born in Highland Park, Michigan, but has strong, deep roots in Cannon County where both her mother and father were born and raised. Mr. and Mrs. Petty settled in Woodbury after Arthur's military duty had taken them to California, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, North Carolina, and Washington State.
Margie was a beloved wife, mother, and homemaker. She was a representative for Elizabeth Arden for 26 years, a union representative in Seattle, and owned and operated The Cloth Shop in Woodbury for 17 years. In addition, she was a Girl Scout leader for 20 years, and president of the Veteran of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, Post 8870.
Mrs. Petty was a devout Christian, a bible scholar, and a member of the Sunny Slope Church of Christ. While in Puerto Rico, she helped found a Church of Christ that remains active today.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, April 14, 2017 in the chapel of the Woodbury Funeral Home with Brother Boyd Barker officiating. Interment will follow in the Curlee Cemetery. Visitation with the family will be from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Thursday, April 13, 2017.
