Emily Sissom joined former Cannon County greats Julie Powell and Vickie Todd as the only 2,000-point scorers in school history - male or female - during her smashing senior season.
Sissom joined Powell and Todd as the only players in Cannon County history, regardless of gender, to earn multiple all-state honors when she was named to the Tennessee Sports Writers Class AA All-State Team Saturday. Sissom also earned All-State honors in 2010. Powell was a four-time All-State selection. Sissom and Todd are two-time All-Staters.
"Emily is deserving of recognition as an All-State player," Cannon County Head Coach Michael Dodgen said. "Emily led our team to great success during her career and she put up big numbers but, to me, All-State is much more than numbers. It's about leadership, being a good teammate, doing the right things, and being a solid player. Emily has been all of those things to Cannon County basketball."
Sissom capped her career as Tennessee's all-time leader in 3-point field goals (385), and her 2,181 points are third all-time at Cannon County, behind Powell and Todd, respectively.
A four-time All-District 8-AA selection, Sissom's illustrious career coincided with a renaissance of Cannon County girls basketball. A Union signee, Sissom led the Lionettes in scoring (13.2) as Cannon County won 30 games and reached the TSSAA Class AA State Tournament for the first time since 1992. The Lionettes reached the Final Four, their highest finish since the 1989 squad won the state championship.
"It's an honor to be named to the All-State team because there are some great, great players in Tennessee and I am appreciative to the sports writers who considered me to be in that company," Sissom said. "I have been fortunate to play with some awesome teammates and that allowed us to have success as a team."
Sissom was named MVP of the Sandestin Beach Basketball Classic at Christmas. She was named first-team All-District 8-AA, and earned All-District Tournament, All-Region 4-AA Tournament and All-State Tournament during the 2010-11 season.
District 8-AA had three representatives on the Class AA All-State team. Upperman's Kayla Biles and Livingston Academy's Mackenzie Sells also were named All-State.
