Cannon County suffered a rare home sweep against District 8-AA foe Upperman at Robert A. Harris Gymnasium Tuesday.
The Lionettes (20-6, 5-5) suffered a 32-27 setback against No. 1-ranked Upperman, and the Lions fell 75-51, though they put up a much better showing than their previous road loss against the Bees.
The Lionettes struggled through a dismal offensive first half and trailed 17-6 at intermission. They were held scoreless for most of the first quarter before Lindsey Reed's steal and layup prevented the shutout.
Cannon County, led by Abbey Sissom's 13 points, battled back in the second half and pulled to within one possession four times in the final 10 minutes, but Upperman answered every challenge to maintain its hold atop the 8-AA standings.
Jordan Hollis netted six for the Lionettes, who also received four each from Reed and Madison Walkup.
Cory Henley led Cannon County with 14 points and Tommy Mitchell added 12 for the Lions (8-18, 2-8). Cannon County trailed 18-2 after a first quarter that saw it misfire on nine of 10 shots. They regrouped from there and competed for the remaining three quarters.
Though Cannon County never made a serious run at the Bees, it did put together good offense and solid play for most of the second half.
Henley's three treys in the third quarter keyed a 6-of-10 shooting performance for the Lions in the frame.
Tanner Larson added six points and Jarrett Melton finished with five for the Lions.
Cannon County travels to Warren County for the final non-conference game of the season Friday. Tip for the girls game is 6 p.m.
